If you want a training session that gives the floor to a disabled person to explain what we really mean by disability equality then make sure
you are hiring a disabled person.
Increasing numbers of non-disabled people and general training companies think they understand the issues and are been hired to deliver this training but can only ever talk about disabled
people as 'them', rather than 'us'.
Since the Equality bodies were merged and with the Equality Act 2010 now introduced, there is a trend towards a whole raft of equality issues being bundled up together and sold as diversity training. Whilst it is true that in facing discrimination,
disabled people have something in common with other groups of people, the discrimination faced by other groups is largely
attitudinal. Disabled people also still face physical barriers in the built environment, transport etc as well as barriers in accessing information,
so the issues are therefore more complex and the need for specific training by disabled people is still highly applicable.
